Nostalgia #3

It boggles my mind that as humans we possess the ability to connect with things that purely exist in our imagination.

Yesterday I got a new bookshelf installed at my place and suddenly I feel that there is finally a home for my books (I could only relocate less than half of them so far), even though they were locked and stored at my home all the time. Perhaps, to see them finally breathing out in the open gives me a breath of fresh air 😊

Being an introverted kid, the largest number of my friends dwelled inside books. These were the friends who made me laugh, cry, rejoice and despair while I lived their tales along with them. But most importantly, these were the friends who taught me that defeats are temporary, victory is not final, character outshines brilliance, every dark cloud has a silver lining, daily chores may keep the world going but we have a higher purpose to serve, compassion is strength and honesty a virtue.

I shared a revered bond with the parents of my friends too. Till date, my respect for Enid Blyton, Ruskin Bond, Mark Twain, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Purushottam Laxman Deshpande and in the more recent times Paulo Coelho, Robin Sharma, Anand Neelakantan, Amish and many more has only increased. I never met Uncle Pai who created Amar Chitra Katha or Pran who created Diamond comics, but for me they are still alive. These were the people who taught me that immortality is not a myth, and that people can stay alive in other people’s consciousness even after their bodies are long gone.

And perhaps I am excited today for a specific reason. The truth is that these extraordinary friends, their invaluable companionship and their timeless lessons exist only in my imagination and there is no proof of their existence in the real world. But now my newly nestled books and my brand-new bookshelf very much exist in this real world for everyone to see…and hopefully the person I have become today is the biggest proof of their existence.
