In the recently concluded Test series between India and England, one statement made by the Indian captain, Rohit Sharma, stands out for me. He said “It's a tough format and if you want success and if you want to excel, then hunger is very important. We will only give chances to the ones who have that hunger. You eventually get to know who doesn't have that hunger to play Tests”
From my personal experience, it is not the most experienced or even the most innovative team that outperforms the competition. It is the team that is most hungry and gritty that will show the results. While experience can be a guiding force for any team, a team should consist of people who are hungry to prove that they can deliver the expected results.
Why the word “hunger” and not “will” to perform? Because will can fade away with lack of discipline and strength, but hunger always returns. Hunger signifies the very struggle for existence and this what drives a team’s performance every single day. What is the reason for your team to exist? What value is your team delivering every single day? Is your team hungry to outperform your competition?
